Education Department Proposes Increasing Minimum Passing Marks for Matric and Inter

The Education Department has proposed raising the minimum passing marks for matriculation (classes 9 and 10) and intermediate (classes 11 and 12) exams from the current 33% to 40%. If approved, the revised criteria will take effect from the annual examinations in 2026.

The proposed policy aims to curb rote memorization and encourage conceptual understanding among students, thereby strengthening the overall quality of education. The final decision will be made following consultation with the committee of chairpersons representing all nine educational boards in the province.

federal board matric exam

For the 2025 examination cycle, the existing 33% pass mark requirement will remain unchanged. Currently, students must secure at least 33% in both theory and practical sections of each subject. Starting in 2026, however, students will be required to achieve a minimum of 40% in every subject.

In addition, the term “Fail” will be replaced with “Unsatisfactory” under the revised policy, and a new grading system will be introduced to further improve academic standards and assessment practices.

The proposed changes will be implemented uniformly across all educational boards in Punjab, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, and DG Khan.

Teacher associations have expressed support for the move, calling it a step forward in raising the bar for student performance and learning outcomes.

  • This complaint is lodged against Punjab Govt Schools.
The Govt schools education in punjab has become much miserable after declaring two days weekly holidays. This means less than 91 days for study in year:
    1-90 days summer vacations.
    2-20 days winner vacations.
    3-25 days Gazetted holidays.
    4-104 days (two days weekly)
    5-10 days sessional break holidays.
    6-05 local holidays.
    7-10 teachers own vaccinations.
    8-10 days miscellaneous off days.
    Total=274 vacations in year.
Above circumstances shows teachers avail paid 09 month vacations and no seriousness towards education of children of poor people’s of Punjab.
Teacher also are non serious for studies of children. Even from start of April, teachers begin to uploade fake vedios that Govt is seriously thinking for summer vacations early.
The PMLN supremo vision is education emergency for best learning of students. Hence, two and half weekly holidays in Govt Schools is sheer violation of the Nawaz Sharif real dream for this nation.
It is therefore emphasised to CM Punjab to reverse the decision of two days weekly holidays in Govt schools and colleges. Also requested to formulate innovative solutions for better education of students and proper teachers trainings.

  • They be doing everything other than improving the education system and actually providing quality education in schools and collages

  • For this action, students should be provided with good and intellectual teachers so that they could teach today’s students in a better way.. most of the teachers are junior at schools who are really not performing their duties well and for this reason students are suffering from many problems..
