Virat Kohli Calls Time on Test Career

In a moment that signals the end of one of Indian cricket’s most iconic chapters, Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing down the curtain on a red-ball career that redefined India’s presence on the global stage.

The 36-year-old, who last featured in India’s away series in Australia earlier this year, has confirmed the decision, according to international media.

Virat Kohli’s Test career is the stuff of legend, despite it not being his strongest format. Since making his debut against the West Indies in 2011, he evolved both as a batter and a leader. As captain, he led India in 68 Tests, winning 40—the most by any Indian skipper.

In 123 Test matches, Kohli scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 fifties.

There were growing rumours that Kohli had already informed the BCCI of his retirement some days ago, with the board urging him to stick around at least until the England series, which did not come to pass.

With his retirement from Test cricket confirmed, ODI cricket is all that remains for Virat Kohli on the international stage.

His decision also comes at a time when Indian Test cricket is in transition. With Rohit Sharma also gone, Jasprit Bumrah unwilling to take on the full-series workload, and selectors considering younger leadership options, India’s Test team could look very different in the coming months.

As tributes pour in from former players, pundits, and teammates, one thing is certain: Virat Kohli didn’t just play Test cricket—he reignited its flame for a new generation of Indian cricketers.
