PFF Elections Postponed

The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has officially postponed the 2025 Executive Committee elections, originally scheduled for May 20, due to ongoing regional tensions and logistical hurdles.

In a letter issued to Congress members on May 14, Acting General Secretary Muhammad Shahid Niaz Khokhar confirmed that the PFF Extraordinary Congress will now take place on Tuesday, May 27, in Lahore. The process was initially expected to be completed on May 20.

According to the communication, rising tensions between Pakistan and India have disrupted the travel schedules of international observers from FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), making it difficult to conduct the PFF elections with full oversight. These unforeseen complications also triggered administrative and logistical delays, forcing the PFF to shift the date.

“These unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances have also caused logistical and administrative challenges that have affected the organisation and coordination of the PFF Extraordinary Congress,” the letter stated.

The FIFA and AFC delegations play a critical role in supervising the electoral process, especially given Pakistan’s troubled football history, which has included suspensions and governance disputes. The presence of international observers ensures transparency and legitimacy of the elections—something the PFF is keen to uphold this time around.

The postponed election will see three confirmed candidates contest for the role of PFF President: Syed Mohsen Gilani, Taha Alizai, and Zaka Ullah.

These names represent a new chapter of leadership, distinct from previous cycles that were marred by infighting and court cases. The upcoming vote is expected to be closely watched not only within the country but also by global football governing bodies.

Despite the postponement, the PFF emphasized that the Congress will proceed with the same agenda. Officials expressed hope that the delay would allow for proper coordination with FIFA and AFC representatives.

With Pakistan’s footballing future still trying to regain stability and international trust, the May 27 election could prove pivotal in shaping a path forward.
