In a move that signals the Pakistan Cricket Board’s growing intent to blend modern thinking with experience, former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed is set to join the board’s selection committee.
According to sources in local media, a formal announcement is expected in the coming days. The decision to induct Sarfaraz into the selection panel is seen as part of a broader shift under the board’s current leadership—one that places a premium on contemporary cricket knowledge and a deeper understanding of dressing room dynamics and leadership roles.
Sarfaraz Ahmed’s expected appointment to the selection committee would mark a return to official national team duties for the 37-year-old, who last represented Pakistan in a Test match in 2023. He brings a wealth of experience as a former captain across all three formats, having led Pakistan to their historic Champions Trophy triumph in 2017, and also played a key role in shaping the team’s white-ball resurgence in the late 2010s.
Since then, he transitioned into a mentorship role which was recently abolished, but PCB officials believe Sarfaraz’s proximity to the current generation of players—both as a teammate and senior pro—makes him uniquely positioned to provide insight into team composition, player temperament, and evolving roles.
The shake-up in the selection committee comes as Pakistan cricket embarks on a transitional phase. With new captains and a revamped coaching structure also in the works, the PCB is keen to bring in selectors who are more in tune with modern playing styles, workload management, and long-term squad building.
At present, Pakistan men’s national selection committee consists of Aaqib Javed, Aleem Dar, Hassan Cheema, Azhar Ali, and Asad Safique.
If finalized, his appointment could also inspire a future trend in Pakistan cricket: actively integrating recently retired or fringe players into key administrative and cricketing roles—a practice long followed by top cricketing nations to ensure continuity and contextual wisdom.
As Pakistan embarks on its next cricketing chapter, voices like Sarfaraz Ahmed’s will be crucial in shaping the future of cricket in the country.
