The build-up to the Asia Cup 2025, a marquee event in the cricketing calendar, has been overshadowed by escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The tournament, which was set to be played in the T20 format in preparation for the 2026 World Cup, was scheduled to feature top Asian teams, including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and defending champions India.
However, the tournament’s future now hangs in the balance after a major development. According to sources, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has informed the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) of its decision to withdraw from both the Men’s Asia Cup and the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup. The ACC, currently chaired by Pakistan’s Mohsin Naqvi, received verbal communication from the BCCI citing the current political climate as the primary reason for the pullout.
A BCCI official, quoted by the Indian Express, stated, “Team India can’t compete in a tournament that is organised by the ACC whose head is a Pakistan minister. We have to respect the sentiments of our people. We have verbally communicated to the ACC about our decision to pull out from the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, and other events. We are talking to the Indian government.”
This decision follows heightened tensions after India reportedly launched missile attacks on Pakistani cities, further straining diplomatic relations. The move has significant implications for the tournament, as India was not only the host nation but also a major draw for sponsors and broadcasters. With the majority of sponsors hailing from India, the ACC may be forced to consider cancelling the event altogether.
The previous edition of the Asia Cup, held in 2023, saw India clinch the title after defeating Sri Lanka in the final. That tournament was hosted by Pakistan using a hybrid model, with India playing all their matches in Sri Lanka. A similar arrangement was used for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where India played their matches in Dubai.
