People in Sindh should get ready for a tough week ahead, as weather experts warn of an intense heatwave expected to hit the province from May 24 to June 1. This warning comes after a low-pressure system formed in the Arabian Sea due to unusually warm sea temperatures.
The system, now near India’s western coast, could become a deep depression or even a cyclone—possibly named Shakti—by May 24 or 25 if conditions remain favorable.
Karachi is likely to feel the heat even more, as the sea breeze may stop, causing daytime temperatures to rise above 40°C. The combination of high heat and humidity will make it feel even hotter, especially in coastal areas. Indoor temperatures could also climb higher than outside, making things worse for residents already dealing with long power outages.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) says heatwave conditions are expected to last all week, with high pressure in the upper atmosphere keeping temperatures 4 to 6°C above normal in Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan from May 20 to May 24.
In central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, temperatures will be 5 to 7°C above normal during the same period. Dust storms and gusty winds may also hit some plain areas due to the extreme heat.
Public Safety Precautions:
- The public, especially children, women, and the elderly, should avoid direct sunlight and stay hydrated.
- Farmers are advised to plan their activities carefully and take care of their livestock.
- Rising temperatures in northern areas may increase the rate of snowmelt.
- Everyone is urged to use water wisely.
- Authorities have been asked to stay alert and take necessary steps to manage the impact of the heatwave.
Updates on the system’s movement and intensity are expected in the coming days.
