Pakistan’s sporting fraternity is mourning the loss of one of its most devoted administrators. Asif Azeem, president of the Pakistan Softball Federation and a long-serving figure in the country’s sports landscape, passed away on Thursday at the age of 53 due to heart-related complications.
Asif Azeem had been receiving treatment at a local hospital in Karachi for the past two weeks after suffering a major heart attack earlier this month. His condition remained critical despite continued medical care, and his son confirmed his passing late Thursday.
He was laid to rest on Friday after Asr prayers in Karachi, with several members of the sports community in attendance to pay their final respects.
Known for his quiet but determined work behind the scenes, Asif Azeem’s career in sports administration spanned decades. While he made his name through softball, his influence stretched far wider. He played key roles with the Pakistan Blind Cricket Team, Special Olympics Pakistan, and most recently served as the media coordinator for the Pakistan Olympic Association. His ability to connect across disciplines and communities made him a respected voice in multiple sports circles.
As president of the Pakistan Softball Federation, Asif Azeem worked tirelessly to raise the profile of a sport often overlooked on the national stage. Under his leadership, softball saw growth at both elite and grassroots levels. He championed nationwide tournaments, school outreach programs, and capacity-building workshops, earning praise for his inclusive vision and practical approach.
His passing leaves a notable void—not only in softball but across the broader structure of Pakistan’s sports administration. Colleagues remember him as a passionate organiser, a collaborative leader, and above all, someone who saw potential in people long before they saw it in themselves.
