An English county cricket club managed to score just two runs, one of which was a wide, before getting bowled out chasing over 400 runs.
Richmond Cricket Club’s fourth XI set an unwanted record after being bowled out for only two runs in a Middlesex League Division One match against North London Cricket Club’s third XI.
The match saw North London bat first, posting a massive total of 426 runs in 45 overs, with Dan Simmons scoring 140. Richmond’s bowlers struggled, conceding 92 extras, including 63 wides.
In reply, Richmond’s fourth XI collapsed, losing all their wickets for just two runs in 5.4 overs. Eight batters were dismissed without scoring, and only Tom Petrides managed a single run. The team’s second run came from a wide, while Rafiqul Haque remained not out on zero.
North London’s captain, Tom Spawton, remarked that his team could have bowled Richmond out for zero, noting that one run was a wide and the other resulted from a dropped catch.
Richmond’s deputy chairman, Steve Deakin, attributed the result to a shortage of available players, saying the club had about 40 players unavailable that week, forcing captains to field makeshift teams.
The match will be remembered as one of the lowest team totals in not just county cricket but cricket in genreal, highlighting both the unpredictability of the gentlemen’s game.
