Private Schools Increase Fees Before Summer Holidays

Private schools in Punjab have increased tuition fees just before the summer vacation, despite a court order restricting such hikes. The issue was raised in the Punjab Assembly, where lawmakers expressed concern over schools ignoring legal guidelines.

MPA Ahmad Rasheed Bhatti brought the matter to light, stating that schools have raised fees by Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 8,000 per student — a hike of up to 26% — even though classes will not resume for three months.

He reminded the House that the Lahore High Court had previously ruled that schools can only charge half the monthly fee during summer holidays. “The court’s decision is being openly violated,” Bhatti said during the session.

Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan called the fee increase “an act of cruelty” and directed the Education Minister to take action against schools involved. Punjab’s The minister also assured the assembly that the matter would be investigated immediately.

Last year, the Directorate of Private Institutions issued a notice stating that all extra charges beyond admission and monthly fees are illegal. It also warned schools not to pressure parents into buying school-branded notebooks.

The matter has now been referred to the Standing Committee on Schools for further investigation and action.
