In the wake of deadly wind and rain storms that struck Punjab over the weekend, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has called on the government to introduce strict guidelines for the installation of solar panels.
The PDMA made this appeal after heavy rains and windstorms claimed at least 19 lives and injured over 90 people across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Among the casualties, officials say 70 percent were caused by the collapse of poorly installed solar panels or solar-related structures.
In letters sent to the Energy Department, Local Government Department, and senior administrative officials, PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia emphasized the urgent need for regulation.
The authority warned that rooftop and open-structure solar panels must be installed using certified materials and according to recognized engineering standards to withstand harsh weather conditions.
The PDMA stressed that all solar installations should be “technically sound, structurally secure, and approved by the concerned authorities.”
It also called for immediate surveys to identify and address potentially dangerous installations, along with routine inspections and maintenance protocols.
“Timely action will help protect lives, public infrastructure, and support the long-term success of solar energy initiatives in Punjab,” the PDMA stated.
