Massive Increase Proposed in Vehicle Registration Fees

The upcoming Punjab budget for fiscal year 2025–26 is likely to bring tough news for vehicle and motorcycle owners, as the government plans a sharp increase in registration fees.

Sources reveal that the Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Department has submitted proposals suggesting significant hikes. The changes aim to increase provincial revenue and improve transparency in the registration process.

Proposed Registration Fee Hikes:

  • Cars up to 1000cc: From Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 5,000
  • Cars from 1001cc to 1800cc: From Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 11,000
  • Cars above 1800cc: From Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 22,000
  • Heavy transport vehicles (HTVs): From Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 11,000

Motorcycle registration fees are also expected to rise, but the exact figures will be revealed when the budget is officially presented.

The proposed hikes have triggered concerns among citizens, with many arguing that buying and owning a vehicle is already expensive. Industry experts fear the move could negatively impact vehicle sales and local manufacturing.

However, officials maintain the decision is necessary to tighten financial discipline and curb fake registrations. Final approval will be made during the cabinet meeting and budget session.
