RCB’s Victory Parade Claims Lives of 11 People

What was meant to be a joyous celebration of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) historic IPL victory turned into a tragedy on Wednesday, as at least 11 people lost their lives and dozens more were injured in a stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The incident reportedly occurred due to an unexpectedly massive crowd of fans, far exceeding the stadium’s capacity of 35,000, gathered to celebrate RCB’s first IPL title in the competition’s history. Reports suggest that nearly 200,000 to 300,000 people flooded the area, overwhelming the local authorities and causing chaos as they attempted to catch a glimpse of their cricketing heroes.

The stampede began when small gates at the stadium were broken down by fans eager to get closer to the players. In the ensuing panic, several people were trampled or injured, with many requiring urgent medical attention.

RCB, in a statement, expressed deep regret over the incident. “We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports,” the team said. “The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us. We mourn the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families.”

While RCB initially confirmed a victory parade, local authorities advised against it due to the expected crowd, and the parade was scaled back. Despite this, the crowds continued to swell, overwhelming the city’s traffic and metro systems.

As the day wore on, the police had to suspend metro stations near the venue and deployed additional security personnel to manage the crowd. However, these measures proved insufficient in preventing the chaos.

While RCB’s IPL victory will go down as one of the most memorable moments in the team’s history, the tragic events outside Chinnaswamy Stadium have left a dark cloud over what should have been a day of celebration for Bengaluru.
