Azerbaijan to Buy 40 JF-17 Fighter Jets From Pakistan

Pakistan has finalized a major defense export agreement with Azerbaijan for the sale of 40 JF-17 Block III fighter jets. The deal, reportedly valued between $1.6 billion and $4.2 billion, will see Azerbaijan’s air force significantly upgraded with the latest variant of the JF-17 Thunder.

The JF-17 Block III features advanced avionics, an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, and compatibility with long-range PL-15 and PL-10 air-to-air missiles. Azerbaijan may also integrate Turkish Gökdoğan and Bozdoğan missiles, reflecting growing defense ties among Pakistan, Azerbaijan, and Turkey.

The deal is part of Azerbaijan’s broader strategy to modernize its air force and reduce reliance on aging Russian aircraft, especially as regional security dynamics shift in the South Caucasus.

The agreement follows a high-profile demonstration of the JF-17 Block III at the ADEX-2024 defense exhibition in Baku, attended by President Ilham Aliyev, who praised the jet’s capabilities and Pakistan’s support. The first batch of jets is expected to be delivered in phases, with training and support included.

This export deal not only boosts Pakistan’s defense industry and economy but also signals a deepening trilateral partnership with Turkey and Azerbaijan. It positions Pakistan as a competitive player in the global arms market, offering advanced yet cost-effective alternatives to Western and Russian platforms.

In a related move, Pakistan recently secured a major defense package from China, which includes 40 J-35A stealth fighter jets, KJ-500 AWACS, HQ-19 air defense systems, and a$3.7 billion debt deferral—further boosting Pakistan’s military capabilities and economic stability.
