Pakistan’s wait for a first win in the third round of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers continued on Tuesday, as they fell 0-1 to Myanmar in a tightly contested Group E match at Yangon’s Thuwunna Stadium.
The only goal of the match came late in the first half, when Myanmar forward Than Paing tapped in from close range following a set piece. However, the goal immediately sparked controversy. Television replays showed Than Paing was in an offside position during the buildup, but the match officials allowed the goal to stand. The decision proved decisive, as it ultimately secured all three points for the home side.
Pakistan, who started the match with a defensive approach, shifted gears in the second half and pressed forward in search of an equalizer. Despite creating several promising chances, the visitors were unable to find the back of the net. Myanmar’s defense held firm, frustrating Pakistan’s attackers and preserving the narrow lead until the final whistle.
The defeat leaves Pakistan at the bottom of Group E, still searching for their first points after two matches. In contrast, Myanmar now sit atop the group with six points from two games, strengthening their position in the race for Asian Cup qualification.
Later today, Afghanistan will face Syria in the other Group E encounter, as the battle for qualification spots continues.
The controversial nature of Myanmar’s winning goal is likely to fuel debate among fans and analysts, with Pakistan’s camp expected to seek clarification from match officials regarding the decision. For now, however, Pakistan must regroup and look ahead to their remaining fixtures as their Asian Cup hopes hang in the balance.
