PCB Facing Major Hurdles Ahead of PSL 11

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is facing several hurdles as it works to prepare for PSL 11, raising concerns about the timeline and readiness of the tournament. Despite ambitions to expand and evolve the league, a number of key matters remain unresolved, which could impact the tournament.

One of the biggest challenges PCB faces is the delayed process of selling two new teams, which are expected to be added in PSL 11. While the idea of expanding PSL from six to eight franchises is practically guaranteed, according to journalist and PCB insider Saleem Khaliq, the official bidding and sale process for the new teams has not been finalized. Without clarity on which cities or owners will be added, planning the league’s structure, scheduling, and logistics cannot move forward.

The PCB has already created a separate company to manage the PSL, but this transition has brought its own set of problems. Many key staff appointments for the new company are still pending, leaving a vacuum in decision-making and slowing down day-to-day operations crucial to the tournament’s preparation.

Further complicating matters, no fresh valuation of the league or its commercial potential has been conducted before renewing agreements with the six existing franchises. This has raised concerns among stakeholders, who believe updated figures are necessary to ensure fair terms for all parties—especially in light of the league’s planned expansion and rising market value.

There is also uncertainty around the ownership status of Multan Sultans. The franchise’s long-term future still awaits a final decision, as Ali Tareen had confirmed he will not renew the ownership on the existing terms, which could affect the overall setup and sale of the new teams. Any delays in resolving the Multan issue could slow down the expansion process further.

On the commercial side, several key rights such as title sponsorship, broadcasting, and production are also up for renewal. These rights are a significant source of revenue and visibility for the PSL, and securing them with favorable terms is critical for the league’s continued growth. However, with the core structure still unsettled, the PCB has not been able to finalize these deals either ahead of PSL 11, which will kick off the next decade of the league.

While the PCB remains committed to holding PSL 11 on schedule and is optimistic about a successful edition, the mounting delays across various areas suggest that much work remains to be done behind the scenes. The coming months will be crucial as the PSL committee looks to resolve these issues and ensure that Pakistan’s premier T20 league moves forward smoothly.
