Pakistan Consider Replacing Mohammad Rizwan With New Talent

As Pakistan cricket embarks on a revolutionary phase under the leadership of Mike Hesson, major changes in team composition appear to be underway. Among the most notable developments is the growing uncertainty surrounding the T20I future of former captain Mohammad Rizwan.

Once a guaranteed starter in the shortest format, Rizwan may now find himself on the fringes of Pakistan’s T20 setup. According to local sources, selectors are seriously considering giving Rohail Nazir an extended run in upcoming white-ball series against Bangladesh and the West Indies. With Mohammad Haris now shoehorned into the team, this could signal a clear shift in Pakistan’s approach ahead of the next T20 World Cup cycle.

Rohail Nazir, a former U-19 captain and consistent domestic performer, is reportedly seen as a better option for playing the modern style of cricket compared to Mohammad Rizwan. The 23-year-old has only played 3 T20Is for Pakistan but is viewed as an investment for the future.

If confirmed, this development would mark a significant pause in Mohammad Rizwan’s T20I career. The 33-year-old has been a mainstay in Pakistan’s top order over the last three years, forming a prolific partnership with Babar Azam. But with both now out of the picture, selectors are eager to inject new energy into the side.

While neither Rizwan nor Babar has officially been barred from T20I setup, sources describe their potential return to T20 internationals as “not just difficult, but nearly impossible” in the immediate term. With Pakistan converting the upcoming ODIs against the West Indies into T20Is, the pair’s likely involvement in international cricket could be against South Africa in November, where experience in red-ball cricket remains valued. But for T20Is, the selectors are leaning toward younger, more dynamic options who offer aggressive intent from ball one.

For Mohammad Rizwan, the next few months could define the direction of his international career. From being among the ICC’s T20I Team of the Year to now potentially being out of the format entirely, the turnaround has been swift. With Rohail Nazir ready to take the gloves, the message from Pakistan’s cricket establishment is clear: the time for transition is now.

Whether Mohammad Rizwan can reclaim his spot in the future will depend on both his performances and how well the new guard performs under pressure. For now, though, the torch appears to be passing on.
