Afghanistan’s Star Duo Set to Sit Out the 2025 MLC Season

Afghanistan’s star all-rounders Rashid Khan and Azmatullah Omarzai will miss the upcoming 2025 edition of Major League Cricket (MLC), dealing a blow to MI New York’s ambitions just days before the tournament begins.

Both players were due to turn out for the same team under the leadership of Nicholas Pooran in the six-team tournament, which starts June 13 (PST) in California. However, as confirmed by international media reports, Rashid and Azmatullah Omarzai have opted to take a break after playing in the IPL recently and will not participate in this year’s competition.

Rashid’s absence, in particular, will be keenly felt. He was MI New York’s most effective bowler last season, taking 10 wickets at an excellent economy rate of 6.15. Despite his efforts, the team managed only two wins in seven games and finished fourth on the table.

Azmatullah, who played for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, was also expected to bring depth to both MI New York’s batting and bowling in his first season with the team. His absence further weakens the squad.

The duo’s absence is reportedly not related to the travel restrictions imposed by the United States on Afghan nationals. There are specific exemptions for events deemed important, such as the World Cup or Olympics, and a few Afghan players have already arrived in the U.S. to join their respective MLC teams for the 2025 season. Naveen-ul-Haq has linked up with MI New York, Noor Ahmad with the Texas Super Kings, and Waqar Salamkheil with Seattle Orcas.

Meanwhile, Gulbadin Naib and Fazalhaq Farooqi—both signed with Seattle Orcas—are still awaiting visa approvals, according to the latest updates.

The 2025 MLC season, the third edition of the league, begins with a blockbuster clash between last year’s finalists Washington Freedom and San Francisco Unicorns at the Oakland Coliseum.

While the league has grown in stature and excitement, the uncertainty around Afghan players remains a concern, with some of the biggest names now sitting out.
