Amid widespread reports circulating on social media claiming that all of Lahore’s electricity poles are being replaced with underground wires, the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has clarified that the initiative is limited to Mall Road. Only the overhead cables along this key thoroughfare are being removed and replaced with underground wiring, not the entire city.
The project, which spans from the State Bank to the Hall Road signal, aims to enhance the visual appeal and functionality of Mall Road by removing unsightly overhead electricity cables and burying them underground. This initiative is the first of its kind to be carried out outside the historic walled city area, building on similar successful efforts in other locations like the Royal Trail and Bhatti Gate.
Social media posts have sparked confusion by implying that the project is a citywide effort to replace all electricity poles in Lahore. However, WCLA’s focus is specifically on Mall Road, a major route that connects several important areas of the city. The goal is to improve the aesthetics of this iconic route while also reducing the risk of accidents associated with overhead cables.
Dr. Asif Tufail, Director General of WCLA, emphasized that while the project will help enhance the visual appeal of Mall Road and improve safety, it is not part of a city-wide overhaul of Lahore’s electrical infrastructure. The undergrounding of cables along Mall Road is expected to not only beautify the area but also improve the reliability of the power supply.
