UK Appoints First-Ever Woman to Lead MI6 in History

The United Kingdom (UK) has appointed Blaise Metreweli, a veteran intelligence officer, as the first woman to lead MI6 in its 115-year history. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the historic decision on Sunday, calling it a vital step as the country faces “threats on an unprecedented scale.”

Metreweli, 47, will take over as the 18th chief of MI6, known as “C,” in autumn 2025, succeeding Sir Richard Moore.

Unlike the Bond films, where the MI6 head is called “M” (famously played by Judi Dench), the real-life chief is known as “C” and is the only publicly named member of the agency. Metreweli will report directly to Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

“Blaise Metreweli’s appointment comes at a time when our intelligence services are more important than ever,” Starmer said. “The UK is facing serious threats, from spy ships in our waters to hackers trying to disrupt our public services.” He praised Metreweli’s leadership and thanked Moore for his five-year service, which included key warnings about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Metreweli, a Cambridge University graduate with a degree in social anthropology, joined MI6 in 1999 as a case officer. She has spent much of her career in operational roles in the Middle East and Europe, earning a reputation as a skilled strategist. She also held senior positions in MI5, the UK’s domestic intelligence agency, and is currently MI6’s Director General of Technology and Innovation. In this role, she oversees cutting-edge technology to protect agents and counter threats like China’s biometric surveillance.

“I am proud and honored to lead MI6,” Metreweli said. “Together with MI5 and GCHQ, we work to keep the British people safe and promote UK interests abroad. I look forward to continuing this mission with our brave officers and international partners.” Her appointment was hailed by outgoing chief Moore, who called her “a highly accomplished leader and one of our top thinkers on technology.”

Foreign Secretary Lammy described Metreweli as the “ideal candidate” to lead MI6 amid global instability, including threats from Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. UK intelligence has accused Russia of sabotage in Europe, while MI5 reported 20 Iran-backed plots targeting dissidents in Britain since 2022. Metreweli’s expertise in technology will be crucial as MI6 adapts to digital challenges, like cyberattacks and online intelligence gathering.

This milestone follows decades of progress for women in UK intelligence. MI5 appointed its first female chief, Stella Rimington, in 1992, followed by Eliza Manningham-Buller from 2002 to 2007. GCHQ named Anne Keast-Butler as its first female head in 2023.

Her leadership comes at a tense time, with global crises like the Israel-Iran conflict and uncertainties in the UK-U.S. intelligence partnership under President Donald Trump’s second term.
