United States (US) President Donald Trump is growing increasingly warm to using US military assets to strike Iranian nuclear facilities and souring on the idea of a diplomatic solution to end Tehran’s escalating conflict with Israel, according to two officials familiar with the ongoing discussions, as reported by CNN.
This shift in Trump’s stance marks a significant change, though he remains open to diplomacy if Iran makes significant concessions.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamene,i stated in a national address that Iran will not surrender and warned that any US military intervention would result in “irreparable damage.” In response, Trump called the supreme leader an “easy target” and said that America’s “patience is wearing thin,” while demanding Iran’s “unconditional surrender.”
Analyst Ellie Geranmayeh, a senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, told media that striking Iran would open “Pandora’s box” and likely consume Trump’s presidency.
She noted that Trump has the ability to step back from war, as he has done in the past, but warned that Iran would view a strike as a declaration of war, with unpredictable consequences.
