The Punjab government has unveiled a major initiative to expand eco-friendly public transport by establishing 2,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the province.
As part of the first phase, the government also plans to introduce around 600 electric buses. The project was reviewed in a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman via video-link at the Civil Secretariat on Friday.
The meeting was attended by secretaries of the health and transport departments, the Lahore Waste Management Company CEO, and other senior officials, while divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners joined online.
Chief Secretary Zaman directed deputy commissioners to identify suitable locations for EV charging stations and bus depots in their districts. He said the goal is to provide citizens with safe, modern, and comfortable transport in line with international standards.
He also ordered a campaign against overloading in public transport to ensure commuter safety.
In addition, the chief secretary called for rooting out corruption in the revenue department, terming it a key duty of deputy commissioners. He urged the swift computerization of land records and emphasized effective action to tackle stray dog bite incidents, which continue to pose a public health risk in many areas.
