WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature in its latest Android beta update that can generate AI-powered chat wallpapers using Meta AI. The feature is currently available to select beta testers running version 2.25.19.11, with broader availability expected in the coming weeks.
The new wallpaper feature can be accessed through the chat theme settings, where there is now an option to create personalized wallpapers using AI. This can be done either globally across all chats or individually for specific conversations.
Once inside the wallpaper settings, it shows a selection of AI-generated wallpaper suggestions. These suggestions are designed to show what the feature is capable of, giving users a starting point to choose from.
For those who want more control over the design, there is also the option to input custom text prompts. Meta AI processes these prompts and generates wallpapers based on the user’s description. The resulting images can be reviewed, refined, and regenerated with more prompts.
This update should allow WhatsApp users to create new wallpapers on a whim, instead of having to rely on their media gallery or WhatsApp’s default grid of wallpapers and themes. WhatsApp, however, is working on adding more to the default supply of chat themes.
While the feature is rolling out to beta testers now, it may not be visible to all users immediately. WhatsApp is gradually expanding access, and some testers running earlier updates may also receive the feature.
Currently, there is no information available on when this feature will be made available in the stable release of the app.
