Punjab is Hiring Retired Teachers

Amid a worsening shortage of faculty in government medical colleges, the Punjab government has decided to recruit retired teachers on a contract basis to fill critical gaps in teaching staff across the province.

According to an official notification from the Punjab Health Department, the age limit for hiring retired faculty members has been extended to 65 years.

This move aims to address faculty shortages in key medical disciplines, including cardiac and pediatric surgery, pulmonology, oncology, cardiology, biochemistry, forensic medicine, and anesthesia.

The health department has issued directives to all 36 government medical colleges and teaching hospitals in the province to complete the recruitment process by June 30. The emergency hiring will focus on at least 12 departments identified as facing acute shortages, with an emphasis on recruiting associate professors.

A letter circulated among public sector medical institutions stated that these appointments are temporary and will automatically end once permanent staff is hired through regular recruitment procedures.
