Vivo has introduced the X Fold 5, its latest foldable smartphone that brings the best-in-class durability and battery size, and even has a slimmer profile over its predecessor. The device was unveiled in China and, following the trend set by the X Fold 3 Pro, may become available in more markets soon.
The Vivo X Fold5 retains the same display sizes as its predecessor, featuring a 6.53-inch external screen and an 8.03-inch inner foldable panel. The Titanium edition measures 9.2mm when folded and 4.3mm when unfolded, weighing 217 grams. This also makes it the thinnest book-style foldable yet. The hinge mechanism, made of high-strength steel and carbon fiber, balances rigidity with reduced weight.
The X Fold 5 is the first foldable device to achieve both IPX8 and IPX9+ ratings for water resistance and carries an IP5X rating for dust protection. The inner LTPO OLED panel supports a 120Hz refresh rate, a resolution of 2,480 x 2,200 pixels, 10-bit color, and a peak brightness of 4,500 nits.
The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, paired with either 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Storage options include 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB, all using UFS 4.1 technology. While the chipset is nearing the end of its cycle, it remains capable of handling high-performance tasks reliably, being an older-generation flagship.
Connectivity features include support for 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, and USB 3.2 Gen 1 with DisplayPort video output. The device also offers off-grid voice and text communication via Bluetooth over distances of up to one kilometer.
The rear camera system includes three 50MP sensors, all developed in partnership with Zeiss. The main unit uses a 1/1.56-inch Sony IMX921 sensor with an f/1.57 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS). The telephoto camera features a 3x periscope lens and a 50MP Sony IMX882 sensor with OIS. The ultrawide lens also uses a 50MP sensor with a 15mm field of view and f/2.05 aperture. All lenses include Zeiss T* coating to reduce glare and improve clarity.
The vivo X Fold5 includes a 6,000 mAh battery, the largest in any foldable smartphone to date. It is split into two silicon-carbon cells, each with an individual capacity of 3,275mAh and 2,725mAh. The phone supports 80W wired charging and 40W wireless charging.
In China, the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage variant is priced at roughly $975. The 12GB/512GB version costs $1,115, the 16GB/512GB model is $1,255, and the top-tier 16GB/1TB version is $1,325. International prices are likely to differ.
