The history of cricket is full of scandals and unsavoury incidents, and another chapter has now been added to that infamous book, with serious allegations surfacing against one of West Indies cricket’s brightest talents, Shamar Joseph.
According to media outlets in Guyana, where Joseph was born, at least eleven women have accused the 25-year-old of sexual misconduct, including harassment, assault, and, in some cases, rape. Fingers have also been pointed at the West Indies Cricket Board for allegedly sheltering the player.
Among the accusers is an 18-year-old woman who claims the cricketer attacked her in March 2023 in Berbice, a region in eastern Guyana. Local newspaper Kaieteur News reports that her family filed a police complaint the following day but believe the investigation stalled after details of the case were allegedly leaked to the player’s relatives.
While Shamar Joseph was not officially named in the initial reports, multiple outlets have hinted the accused’s identity as “part of the historic West Indies squad” that defeated Australia in Brisbane in 2024—a victory that earned Shamar widespread acclaim across the cricketing world.
The controversy is made worse as Joseph continues to feature in West Indies Test squads, including the team’s recent defeat to Australia, despite the allegations making headlines before the match.
Cricket West Indies issued a brief statement saying it had not received any official notice regarding the matter.
“Cricket West Indies has not received any communication or official information and is therefore unable to comment at this time,” the board said in response to queries.
The emerging details are deeply troubling and present a potential crisis for West Indies cricket, just as the team has been working to rebuild its reputation on the international stage. The accusations also raise wider questions about accountability in sport and whether prominent athletes sometimes receive undue protection.
So far, no formal charges have been filed, but lawyers representing the alleged victims say they expect further action in the coming weeks as evidence is reviewed.
Shamar Joseph, who became an overnight hero in January 2024 when he bowled West Indies to a famous victory in Australia, has yet to respond publicly.
While fans and officials await clarity, the case is a reminder that off-field issues can have profound implications for sport. Regardless of the eventual outcome, West Indies cricket will be under intense scrutiny as the investigation unfolds.
West Indies’ next match against Australia starts on July 3, and all eyes will be on the team sheet to see whether Shamar Joseph’s name appears. If it does, this could become one of the most high-profile cases in which cricket and the law collide.
