Punjab is Bringing Major Changes to Health Card Program

The Punjab government has decided to discontinue the use of the Sehat Card in all government hospitals across the province, with the scheme officially ending on June 30.

A notification issued by the Sehat Card Company has instructed medical superintendents to halt all services provided under the card after the deadline.

Introduced during the PTI government as a universal health insurance initiative, the Sehat Card had allowed eligible citizens to access free treatment at both public and private hospitals.

However, officials say a new provincial health program will now replace the previous scheme. Under the updated model, Punjab will roll out specialized medical cards targeting critical treatments.

These include separate cards for cornea, cochlear, bone marrow transplants, and others focused on dialysis, kidney, and liver transplants. A Child Card Surgery program will also be launched for children requiring heart surgery.

The Health Department has assured the public that despite the closure of the original scheme, no disruption in medical assistance is expected. The government says the new approach will allow for more focused and need-based medical services, tailored to serious and high-cost treatments.
