Section 144 Imposed on Peshawar for Muharram — Here’s What’s Banned

To maintain peace and security during Muharram 2025, the district administration in Peshawar has imposed Section 144.

Banned Activities

According to a statement from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, pillion riding has been banned across the city. Authorities have also restricted the movement of Afghan refugees during the religious period to prevent any potential disruption.

The administration has issued a complete ban on aerial firing, hate speech, and the misuse of loudspeakers. These steps aim to ensure communal harmony and prevent the spread of sectarian tension.

Commercial Services Suspended

Hotels, inns, and rent-a-car services are suspended for the duration of Muharram in Peshawar. Shops that refill gas cylinders near procession routes and religious gatherings (majalis) are also ordered to remain closed as a safety precaution.

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee announced that the Muharram moon was sighted on June 26. Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, will be observed on July 6 across Pakistan.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The first day, Youm-e-Umar, marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), the second Caliph of Islam. Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussein ibn Ali (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.
