laptops of the decade 2019
Laptop Mag, a staple in consumer tech journalism for more than three decades, has officially shut down. The decision was announced during a staff meeting led by Faisal Alani, global brand director at Future PLC, which owns the publication. According to The Verge, Alani told employees, “After careful consideration and a review of our long-term strategy, we’ve decided to close the Laptop Mag business effective today.”
Launched in 1991 as the Laptop Buyers Guide and Handbook by Bedford Communications, the magazine quickly became a go-to source for laptop reviews and mobile tech news. It transitioned to digital-only content in 2013 after being acquired by TechMedia Network (now Purch) in 2011. Future PLC, the publisher behind brands such as PC Gamer, Tom’s Guide, and TechRadar, acquired Purch in 2018, bringing Laptop Mag into its portfolio.
Alani expressed gratitude to the team, stating, “We are incredibly grateful for your dedication, talent, and contributions to Laptop Mag, and we are committed to supporting you throughout this transition.” The announcement marks another reduction in Future PLC’s tech media holdings, following the recent closure of AnandTech, another long-standing tech site.
As of now, it remains unclear whether Laptop Mag’s extensive digital archives will remain accessible to the public. Future PLC has not provided further comment on the matter.
