Mumbai Imposes Ban on Azaan Using Loudspeakers

Authorities in Mumbai have banned the use of loudspeakers for the call to prayer (Azaan) in mosques across the city.

According to media reports, the move comes after the Mumbai High Court issued directives aimed at controlling noise pollution. Following the court’s guidance, Mumbai police implemented a citywide ban on loudspeakers in all mosques.

Due to the restriction, many Muslim residents of Mumbai can no longer hear the Azaan through loudspeakers and are now turning to digital Azaan apps as an alternative.

Mumbai Police Commissioner stated that police officials have removed loudspeaker systems from all religious sites to help reduce urban noise levels. He emphasized that the action was not targeted at any single religious community but was part of a broader effort to create a quieter city environment.

In response to the move, five Muslim religious institutions have filed a petition in the Mumbai High Court challenging the method used to remove the loudspeakers.
