250+ Buildings Declared Unsafe After Heavy Monsoon Rainfall in Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi’s Metropolitan Corporation has declared more than 250 old and dilapidated buildings across the city as dangerous, ordering immediate evacuation to prevent potential disasters during the ongoing monsoon season.

The decision comes after a comprehensive survey identified these structures—many of which are residential and commercial properties in densely populated areas like Raja Bazaar, Bhabra Bazaar, Moti Masjid Lane, and Dangi Khoi—as critically unsafe.

According to officials, 188 of these buildings are considered “highly dangerous,” posing a severe risk to life, especially with the threat of heavy rains and possible seismic activity.

Notices have been issued to property owners under the Punjab Local Government Act, 2022, instructing them to either repair or demolish the hazardous structures within 15 days. Failure to comply will result in legal action against both owners and residents.

The situation is particularly dire for low-income families inhabiting these buildings, many of whom are reluctant to vacate due to a lack of alternative housing. Residents have appealed to the government for immediate relocation assistance, emphasizing that evacuation is not feasible without support.

Authorities have warned that the continued occupation of these buildings could lead to catastrophic incidents, as seen in recent roof collapses in the city.
