The federal cabinet has approved the import of 500,000 tons of sugar through the government sector to stabilize domestic prices, the Ministry of Food Security announced on Monday.
According to the ministry, all arrangements for the import have been finalized and immediate implementation has begun.
The ministry stated that the current import strategy is more effective than previous approaches, which often led to artificial shortages and placed a subsidy burden on the national exchequer.
It added that the current government had earlier allowed sugar exports when domestic supply was abundant, and is now importing sugar to ensure price stability in the market.
