Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially launched the Punjab Enforcement Regulatory Authority (PERA), a new body aimed at tackling inflation, illegal encroachments, and profiteering across the province.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Lahore, Maryam Nawaz described PERA as a powerful tool for upholding the law and protecting citizens from exploitation.
She highlighted that PERA, which was conceptualized just eight months ago, is now a fully operational and well-trained force.
The authority will initially begin its work in the Lahore division and is set to expand province-wide, eventually employing around 8,500 personnel. Maryam Nawaz praised Director General (Retired Captain) Farrukh Atiq for his leadership in swiftly bringing the project to life.
The Chief Minister emphasized that PERA will focus on monitoring and preventing illegal land grabs, hoarding, encroachments, and price gouging, ensuring that laws are actively enforced throughout Punjab.
Addressing the challenges of artificial price hikes and urban congestion, Maryam Nawaz criticized the previous price control system, calling it corrupt and ineffective.
She explained that PERA was established after thorough consultation to replace the flawed system with a more organized and accountable regulatory body. She also noted that recent anti-encroachment operations have made public spaces safer, especially for women, and have improved business for local traders.
She also stressed that PERA is more than just a regulatory force—it represents a movement for change, with a strong focus on youth involvement. The Chief Minister thanked Punjab’s Inspector General of Police, Dr. Usman Anwar, for his support and highlighted the importance of interdepartmental cooperation in making PERA a reality.
Significant funding has been allocated to establish PERA, which Maryam Nawaz described as a cornerstone of the government’s efforts to enforce laws, regulate markets, and protect citizens.
