England Slips in Updated Test Championship Table After ICC Over-Rate Penalty

Despite pulling off a nail-biting 22-run victory against India at Lord’s, England have paid a steep price for their inefficiency in the field—one that has dented their standing in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) table.

Ben Stokes’ side has been docked two WTC points for maintaining a slow over rate during the match and have also been fined 10 percent of their match fees.

The sanction, confirmed by the ICC on Tuesday, falls under Article 16.11.2 of the WTC playing conditions. According to the rule, teams are penalized one point for every over short of the required rate, factoring in time allowances. England were found two overs short, which has led to a drop from 24 to 22 points in the current WTC cycle.

This deduction has also had an immediate effect on England’s standing in the World Test Championship points table. Their percentage of points (PCT) has dropped from 66.67% to 61.11%, causing them to slip from second to third place, with Sri Lanka now moving up to second behind Australia.

Latest World Test Championship Table:

Pos Team Played Won Lost Draw Ded Points PCT (%)
1 Australia 3 3 0 0 0 36 100.00
2 Sri Lanka 2 1 0 1 0 16 66.67
3 England 3 2 1 0 2 22 61.11
4 India 3 1 2 0 0 12 33.33
5 Bangladesh 2 0 1 1 0 4 16.67
6 West Indies 3 0 3 0 0 0 0.00

As for the financial penalty, the 10 percent match fee deduction stems from Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate offences. For every over a team falls short, players are fined five percent of their match fee.

England dealt with a similar problem in the previous World Test Championship cycle, being docked a massive 22 points for offences.

The third Test itself was a classic, ending in a gripping final session on Day 5. Ultimately, England’s bowlers held their nerve under pressure to wrap up the match, but the post-match penalties have somewhat dulled the afterglow of victory.

While the win keeps England on the heels of runaway leaders Australia in the WTC race, the point deduction serves as a timely reminder that every minute detail counts in this format. With tough away tours still to come, including the Ashes, England will need to be sharper—not just in their bowling, but in their time management too.
