Punjab Releases Rs. 42 Billion for Affordable Housing

In a significant step toward addressing housing challenges and advancing social welfare, the Punjab government has allocated Rs42.013 billion under its flagship housing support initiative, ‘Apni Chat Apna Ghar’. This marks the largest-ever provincial investment in interest-free housing aid in Punjab’s history.

The funding, released through the Annual Development Programme 2025–26, has been transferred to the Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency (PHATA) to scale up the program under the urban development sector. The allocation follows a proposal from the Housing, Urban Development & Public Health Engineering Department (HUD&PHED), which underscored the scheme’s increasing reach and demand.

Launched in August 2024, the scheme provides interest-free loans of up to Rs1.5 million to individuals owning land to construct their homes. To date, over 51,900 families have benefited, with 6,160 housing units completed and 45,163 units currently under construction across the province.

During a high-level progress review meeting, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed concerned departments to speed up loan processing and application approvals, ensuring that assistance reaches eligible families without delay.

“This initiative goes beyond building homes — it’s about restoring dignity and providing stability to people who have lived with uncertainty for too long,” said CM Maryam Nawaz. “Each house built is a symbol of the government’s commitment and a step toward fulfilling Quaid Nawaz Sharif’s vision of inclusive development.”

Housing Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal briefed the meeting on efforts to streamline and digitize the application process, noting that there are no geographic limitations — eligible applicants from any part of Punjab can apply.

He emphasized that the scheme targets individuals who previously lacked access to financial resources, including daily wage workers, widows, gardeners, vendors, shopkeepers, and other low-income citizens.

To date, more than Rs60.5 billion has been distributed through the program, with the new Rs42 billion release expected to significantly expand its impact in the coming months.

Calling the project “a fresh start” for underserved communities, CM Maryam Nawaz declared:

“When a poor family finally gets a home of their own, it’s not just a personal victory — it’s the state fulfilling its duty. Politics now means service, not slogans.”

With this latest disbursement, the Punjab government reaffirms its dedication to citizen-focused governance. As ‘Apni Chat Apna Ghar’ gains momentum, it is rapidly becoming a symbol of hope and progress, helping thousands realize the dream of homeownership and financial security.
