Islamabad’s “Built in 45 Days” Road Cracks Open After First Monsoon

Islamabad’s newly constructed 9th Avenue underpass, designed to improve traffic flow between Sector H-9 and G-9, has cracked open during the first monsoon rain, raising serious concerns about construction quality and oversight.

According to a report by ProPakistani, the underpass showed signs of surface cracks and water seepage following the first spell of monsoon rains in the capital. The road surface developed large patches of unevenness, and water began collecting at various points within the tunnel structure. Commuters also reported difficulty navigating the route due to poor drainage and sudden waterlogging.

The incident has triggered criticism on social media, where citizens questioned the structural integrity of the project and called for an immediate investigation into its construction standards.

High-Profile Project Announced Weeks Earlier

Just a month ago, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had inaugurated the underpass, calling it a significant step toward resolving Islamabad’s traffic congestion. During the launch, Naqvi had also announced plans for a second underpass between G-9 and G-10, to be built in partnership with the Capital Development Authority (CDA). He emphasized that these initiatives would “make Islamabad signal-free” by reducing wait times and improving connectivity.

The 9th Avenue underpass was celebrated as part of a broader strategy to enhance urban infrastructure in the capital.

Residents of Islamabad are now urging the CDA and federal authorities to launch an inquiry into the construction firm responsible. Given the visibility of this project and the fact that it failed under the very first rain, many have raised questions about whether the materials used met required safety and engineering standards.

With additional infrastructure projects already in the pipeline, citizens and urban planning experts stress the importance of long-term quality assurance over quick project completions.
