Authorities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) have issued a high-alert warning following continuous monsoon rains that threaten to trigger major flooding in the region. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has activated emergency protocols amid rising water levels in the River Jhelum and its tributaries.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), inflows at Mangla Dam are expected to surge from 350,000 to 450,000 cusecs within 24 hours. Officials warned that this may lead to a very dangerous flood situation, particularly in low-lying regions along the riverbanks.
The SDMA has ordered the immediate evacuation of residents from flood-prone areas. It has placed Rescue 1122, fire brigade, police, and civil defense units on 48-hour high alert. Emergency personnel have been instructed to remain fully prepared for rapid deployment in case of flash floods or infrastructure damage.
The SDMA has also directed local authorities to limit vehicular traffic in vulnerable zones and to alert tourists about potential risks. Public awareness efforts are being scaled up, including through the use of mass communication tools and local volunteers, to prevent loss of life and property.
In coordination with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), provincial and district administrations have been notified to maintain round-the-clock monitoring. NDMA has advised relevant departments to ensure the availability of rescue boats, dewatering pumps, backup power supplies, and early warning systems.
