Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday chaired a high-level review meeting in Islamabad to discuss planning and agri-financing for the country’s agricultural development, with a strong focus on supporting small and medium-scale farmers.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister directed authorities to prepare a comprehensive action plan by the end of the month for providing loans on easy terms to farmers.
He particularly asked to give support to those owning less than 12 acres of land, including access to modern agricultural tools, artificial intelligence, and quality seeds.
He stressed that Pakistan’s economic growth is closely linked to value addition in the agricultural sector and increased productivity by farmers. The Prime Minister further called for a strategy to enable farmers to obtain small-scale industrial machinery to process their produce into export-grade commodities.
Reforms are also underway to provide advanced farming equipment, improve water usage, and promote on-farm small industry. These efforts aim to enhance agricultural exports and bring smallholders into the mainstream economy.
Officials also briefed the meeting on ongoing agricultural reforms and the performance of the Agricultural Development Bank and its current lending to farmers.
