Islamabad to Make Car Theft Nearly Impossible

Islamabad’s Excise and Taxation Department is introducing advanced technology aimed at stopping car theft in the city.

According to Excise Director Bilal Azam, special high-tech tags—known as “third number plates”—will soon be installed on vehicles. These tags can be tracked by Safe City cameras even if the car’s original number plate is removed or replaced.

This means that any stolen car can be instantly identified and tracked across the city. “These third number plates cannot be removed or tampered with like regular plates,” Azam explained.

“If a car is stolen, it will still be visible to Safe City cameras, and we’ll know exactly where it is.” In addition, the department is working on a fully digital, paperless vehicle transfer system.

Through mobile apps with facial recognition and biometric verification, car ownership can be changed directly from a smartphone, removing the need for in-person visits or paperwork.

The new system will also alert authorities to cars with unpaid taxes or fake number plates, making it easier to catch offenders in real time.

Azam also shared that the Excise Department collected a record Rs. 23.34 billion in taxes last year, thanks to their growing use of digital tools and online services.
