An Air India A320 aircraft (Flight AI 2744, registration VT-TYA) arriving from Kochi veered off the runway while landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday, amid intense rainfall that affected visibility and ground conditions.
Initial reports suggest the aircraft lost control shortly after touchdown due to adverse weather, causing it to overshoot the runway. During the incident, three of the aircraft’s tyres reportedly burst, and there may be possible damage to one of its engines. Despite the complications, the plane managed to taxi safely to the terminal, where all passengers and crew disembarked without any injuries.
In an official statement, Air India confirmed the occurrence:
“Flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025, encountered heavy rainfall upon landing, resulting in a runway excursion. The aircraft taxied to the gate without further issue, and all passengers and crew exited safely. The aircraft is currently grounded for a thorough inspection. Passenger and crew safety remains our highest priority.”
Emergency teams at Mumbai airport were swiftly deployed to handle the situation. A spokesperson for CSMIA provided further clarification:
“At 09:27 on 21 July 2025, an incoming flight from Kochi experienced a runway excursion at Mumbai Airport. Emergency response units responded immediately. All on board were safe. Minor damage was sustained by the primary runway (09/27), which is now under repair. To avoid disruption, operations have been shifted to the secondary runway (14/32). Safety remains paramount at CSMIA.”
Airport authorities are currently assessing the damage to Runway 09/27, while efforts continue to ensure minimal interruption to flight operations.
