Star Pakistani Spinner Ruled Out of England Tour for Pakistan Shaheens

Pakistan Shaheens’ preparations for their crucial England tour have suffered an early blow, as off-spinner Sajid Khan has been ruled out of the series after fracturing his right thumb during a training session at Tonbridge School Ground.

The injury, sustained during a fielding drill on the eve of their first one-day game against the Professional County Club Select XI in Beckenham, has forced Sajid Khan to withdraw from the tour altogether. After initial assessment by the team’s medical staff, the decision was made to fly the 31-year-old back to Lahore at the earliest, where he will begin rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy.

The injury is a disappointing turn for Sajid Khan, who was looking to use the England tour to force his way into the limited-overs squad after expressing his desire to play all-format cricket for the Green Shirts. A proven performer in the international arena, Sajid Khan’s experience was set to be vital in the Shaheens’ spin attack throughout the three-match series.

The Pakistan Shaheens management, however, has opted against naming a replacement, choosing instead to proceed with the resources at hand. The touring squad features several spin options, including allrounders and emerging players, but Sajid’s absence will undoubtedly be felt, particularly in the middle overs.

Sajid’s untimely exit underscores the fragility of such development tours, which are designed to give fringe and up-and-coming players a platform to press for higher honours. The injury has not only disrupted Shaheens’ bowling plans, but also denied Sajid valuable match exposure in overseas conditions.

Pakistan Shaheens, meanwhile, begin their three-match one-day series later today at the Kent County Cricket Ground, with several eyes now turning to how Saud Shakeel’s side copes without one of its most senior bowling figures. The other two matches are scheduled for July 25 and July 27.
