Elon Musk’s AI venture xAI saw a sharp increase in revenue following the release of its Grok 4 model on July 9. According to data from Appfigures, Grok’s gross revenue on iOS rose 325% by July 11, reaching $419,000, up from $99,000 the day before the launch.
Daily revenue remained strong over the following days, hovering above $367,000 before dipping slightly to $310,000 on July 14. The launch also triggered a spike in downloads, with daily installs jumping 279% to 197,000 by July 11, up from 52,000 before the update.
AI “Waifu” Companion Drew Interest
While the release of Grok’s AI companions on July 14 did contribute to continued app engagement, its impact was comparatively limited. Global iOS downloads rose 40% to 171,000 the day after the companions went live, but revenue increased only 9% to $337,000.
The AI companions, available exclusively to Super Grok subscribers paying $30 per month, have yet to emerge as a major driver of monetization for the platform. One of these new companions included a blonde anime girl, commonly called “waifu” online.
Subscription Tiers Push iOS Revenue Higher
Grok’s growing subscription base appears to be the primary engine behind the revenue spike. Alongside the launch of Grok 4 and Grok 4 Heavy, xAI introduced a premium $300-per-month plan called SuperGrok Heavy. This high-end tier grants early access to upcoming features, including the most advanced models, and has contributed to the revenue growth despite being priced higher than competing AI services from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
App Store Rankings Reflect Launch Momentum
Interest in Grok following the Grok 4 launch also lifted the app’s visibility. By July 12, it ranked No. 3 overall and No. 2 in the Productivity category on the US App Store. While the app’s overall ranking has since slipped to No. 17, it remains No. 2 in Productivity, based on Appfigures data.
iOS Metrics Show Strongest Growth
Appfigures noted that its current analysis is based on iOS data, which is more complete at this stage. Android metrics, available through July 14, are still being processed and were not included in this review.
