Lahore–Islamabad Distance to Decrease by 100 Kilometers

Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has announced a major upgrade of the Lahore-Sialkot Motorway. The road will be widened from four to six lanes and extended to connect Kharian with Islamabad.

This strategic move is aimed at reducing traffic on the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M-2), cutting the travel distance by around 100 kilometers and saving nearly an hour of journey time.

The new link is expected to benefit commuters from several key districts including Gujranwala, Gujrat, Kharian, Jhelum, and Gujar Khan, improving overall regional connectivity.

The announcement came during a high-level meeting held at the National Highway Authority (NHA) Punjab Region Office. The minister directed officials to ensure timely completion of ongoing projects with top construction standards. He also called for a 30-year infrastructure plan to address future needs.

A key point discussed in the meeting was the urgent completion of development work along the Multan Road to Ring Road corridor. Abdul Aleem Khan made it clear that delays or substandard work would not be accepted.

The meeting was attended by the Federal Secretary for Communications, Chairman of the NHA, and the CEO of RUDA, who briefed the minister on various ongoing projects and upcoming infrastructure plans in Punjab.

  • Unfortunately Dams dont make money they only save the lives of poor public. Motorway Extension is not a vital need but yes its construction will make lots of money

    • Poor people are not a concern for this government. They only want such big construction projects so they can take kick backs and commission and fill their pockets.

    • Ma’am Dam’s should be made but who will make acvountable to release due share of Water to other provinces Sindh is lower reparian and is not getting due share of water establishment is from punjab mostly and it work only for the benefits of punjab and kpk where they mostly move no Motorway in Sindh it’s fed govt subject they not make railway fplatform in Sindh 98% of budget in pakistan railway was used in Punjab in saad rafique tenure .

    • While dams play a vital role, the importance of roads cannot be overlooked. Roads are the backbone of economic activity,enhancing mobility, trade, access to markets, connectivity, and development in every region.
      Claiming that road construction projects are inherently corrupt while dam projects are clean is not a valid or logical argument. Allegations of corruption should be supported with evidence, and each project should be evaluated on its own merit— not on generalized assumptions.

  • Allow motorcycles on motorway, put strict rules of license, helmet + complete riding gear. Whole world allows motorcycles om highways

    • He didn’t left PTI for that. Infact the biggest reason PTI had Him was cuz he was a money machine for Imm the dim. He spent stupendous amount of money on PTI during his time and at the end the Mahatama Imm the dim threw him away like used tissue

  • Well can we dare to ask why M2 is 100 km more than the required length. Imagine the wastage of fuel – in terms of money as well as pollution – by thousands of vehicles since 90s.

  • As this motorway connects the major cities and reduce more time, just a thought for everyone why the hell the M1 was built at first place which did not connect any city.

  • They will never plan railway system for facilition of passengers and cargo. They will be planning for better kickback and that requires immigate maintenance.

  • No need of this rubbish this Land mafia purchase a lot of Land in this surroundings at very low price after announcement of this project the price will take high gear and the amount goes to their pockets
    Therefore make dams grow trees construct industries not these types of foolish projects

  • I guess its good but we really need high speed railway which at 300km/h can make access to major cities easy . this will also save fuel. China has the technology. but I think toll tax revenues on motorway is controlled by FWO
