The biggest rivalry in world cricket is set to ignite the Asia Cup once again, with reports suggesting that India and Pakistan will be placed in the same group for the 2025 edition of the tournament, setting up the mouth-watering prospect of up to three meetings between the arch-rivals in just a matter of weeks.
According to a report in foreign media, the schedule of the tournament is in the final stages of being ratified with Pakistan, India, Hong Kong, and UAE making up Group A.
As per the tournament’s structure, Pakistan and India’s first meeting will be in the group stages of the Asia Cup. If both teams advance to the Super Four stage, which they are widely expected to, they’ll face each other again. And should both qualify for the final, fans could be treated to a rare triple clash between the subcontinental giants.
This will be the first time the two Asian powerhouses will go head-to-head since their Champions Trophy clash earlier this year. However, this fixture carries added political intrigue as these matches will be the first time the countries have shared a cricketing field since their military scuffle in May. Both countries have been on frosty terms since then, even in the sporting arenas, and if their Asia Cup meetings go ahead, it will represent an easing of those hostilities.
The 2025 Asia Cup is reportedly set to be played in the UAE from September 10 to 28. It will be held in the T20 format as part of the buildup to next year’s T20 World Cup. With the schedule likely to be released within the next 48 hours, excitement is already building.
The stage is being set. The countdown is on. And cricket fans around the world may be just weeks away from witnessing not one, but possibly three India-Pakistan showdowns.
