Another Major Country to Recognize Palestine in September

Canada has officially announced its decision to recognize a Palestinian state in September, aligning itself with France and the United Kingdom amid growing global pressure on Israel over the war in Gaza.

Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the move on Wednesday, stating that Canada has “long been committed to a two-state solution,” envisioning an independent Palestine living peacefully alongside Israel.

Speaking alongside Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Carney said recognition will take place at the 80th United Nations General Assembly. He added that the Palestinian Authority has pledged to carry out key reforms.

France and the UK have also recently signaled support for Palestinian statehood. While France has confirmed recognition in September, the UK has said it will follow suit if Israel does not agree to a ceasefire in Gaza.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump. In a post on Truth Social, he warned that Canada’s stance could jeopardize ongoing trade talks. “That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them,” Trump wrote, days ahead of a potential tariff hike.

Meanwhile, France welcomed Canada’s position. The Elysee Palace noted that President Emmanuel Macron had spoken to Carney and aims to rally further support ahead of the UN meeting.
