Pakistan’s CPL Presence Grows as Veteran Signs with Former Champions

Guyana Amazon Warriors have entrusted Iftikhar Ahmed with their power-hitting needs after the 2023 champs snapped up the veteran all-rounder for the upcoming 2025 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season, which kicks off on August 15 (PST).

The 34-year-old will be making his maiden appearance in the CPL, adding the Caribbean to his long list of globe-trotting venues. However, Iftikhar Ahmed’s stint with the Warriors is expected to be a short one, as he will be stepping in as a replacement for Hassan Khan, who is unavailable for the Warriors’ first three fixtures.

While this marks Iftikhar Ahmed’s first foray into Caribbean franchise cricket, he is far from a stranger to global T20 leagues. In the Pakistan Super League (PSL), he’s amassed over 1,100 runs, with five half-centuries and 13 wickets to his name. His best form, however, has often come in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), where he has averaged 50 with the bat and boasts a strike rate of 136.95, including a memorable century.

His arrival in Guyana comes at a time when Pakistani representation is strong in the CPL. Naseem Shah, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Nawaz, Imad Wasim, and Usman Tariq are all expected to feature across different franchises this season.

Naseem returns to St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, where he played a vital role in their 2021 title triumph. Meanwhile, Amir and promising spinner Usman Tariq will turn out for the Trinbago Knight Riders. Nawaz also joins the Patriots, and Imad Wasim returns to the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons after being retained by the franchise.

For Iftikhar Ahmed, this CPL season with Guyana Amazon Warriors offers an exciting new chapter—a chance to test his skills in Caribbean conditions, earn CPL credentials, and possibly leave a lasting impact that could pave his way back to the national team.

As the CPL returns with its signature flair, fans will be eager to see how Iftikhar and his compatriots fare on one of T20 cricket’s most electric stages.
