The Department of Specialized Health Care and Medical Education in Punjab has rolled out a new summer vacation policy for teaching faculty.
According to an official notification, the new policy will take effect from August 1, 2025. The department emphasized that public health is a continuous and essential service, and tertiary care hospitals linked with medical colleges serve as critical hubs for patient treatment and care.
The notification highlighted the need to maintain a balance between the academic responsibilities of faculty and their clinical duties. It noted that while academic leave is allowed, it should not disrupt the healthcare delivery system.
The leave is considered a facility, not an entitlement. Under the policy, summer vacation will be granted for only three weeks and will be deducted from the faculty’s earned leave.
The policy applies to Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, Senior Registrars, and Demonstrators at all public medical colleges and affiliated teaching hospitals across Punjab.
During the vacation rotation period, 67% of clinical faculty and 50% of basic sciences faculty must remain on duty to maintain patient services. Each institution is required to form a Leave Management Committee, headed by the Principal, CEO/COO/MD, Medical Superintendent, and Senior Head of Department.
These committees must submit a finalized leave roster to the department by April 30 each year.
