Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced the upcoming launch of the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SART) system in Faisalabad and Gujranwala, following a successful road test in Lahore.
The chief minister conducted an experimental ride in the urban electric SART train on Tuesday, inspecting the vehicle’s features and observing its test run from Raiwind Road to Muslim Town.
Transport Minister Bilal Akbar provided a briefing during the visit, highlighting the system’s advanced technology and passenger-focused design.
Maryam Nawaz monitored the test drive amid regular traffic, where onlookers gathered to catch a glimpse of the modern transport system. The launch of SART in Lahore marks Pakistan’s first fully electric, trackless tram system.
The system, developed by Norinco International, includes air-conditioned coaches and offers seating for up to 320 passengers across three compartments, with the capacity to add a fourth. On a full charge, the train can travel up to 40 kilometers.
Already operational in countries like Turkey, China, and the UAE, the SART system is expected to reduce traffic congestion and help lower environmental pollution.
Speaking at the event, the chief minister said the initiative would enhance Lahore’s urban landscape and added that similar projects would soon bring good news to the people of Faisalabad and Gujranwala.
