Bill Presented to Make Eviction of Wife a Punishable Crime

A bill seeking to criminalize the unjust eviction of women from their homes was introduced in the National Assembly on Tuesday.

The proposed amendments to various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code were tabled by Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Sharmila Faruqui during the assembly session.

According to the draft, it would be deemed a criminal offense if a husband or any family member forcibly and unfairly expels a woman from her home. The punishment proposed for such an act ranges from three to six months in prison.

The amendment also suggests a fine of up to Rs 200,000 for offenders. Furthermore, cases related to the unlawful eviction of women would be heard by a first-class magistrate.

Named the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2025, the proposal was referred by the Deputy Speaker to the relevant committee for further consideration.
