Pakistan Establishes Diplomatic Relations With Small Country

Pakistan has officially established diplomatic ties with the Federated States of Micronesia, an island nation in the western Pacific Ocean, which became a member of the United Nations in 1991.

The formal agreement was signed during a ceremony in New York by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, and his Micronesian counterpart, Ambassador Jeem S. Lippwe, as announced by the Pakistan Mission to the UN in a press release.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Ahmad emphasized that the new relationship would foster collaboration in areas such as human resource development, capacity building, and addressing climate change. He also highlighted the shared commitment of both nations to work closely on global issues, particularly the promotion of international peace and security at the UN.

Ambassador Ahmad noted the significance of this development, coinciding with Pakistan’s Independence Day, and celebrated the fact that Pakistan is the 100th country to establish ties with Micronesia.

Ambassador Lippwe expressed his enthusiasm for the new partnership, thanking Pakistan for its support and looking forward to strengthening the bond of friendship between the two nations.

Before the signing ceremony, the two ambassadors held a brief meeting to discuss mutual interests and potential areas of collaboration, both bilaterally and within the UN framework. The event was attended by diplomats from both countries, including Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Usman Jadoon.

This development follows Pakistan’s engagement with Pacific island nations in December 2024, when it joined a coalition advocating for a global treaty to phase out fossil fuels and finance a just transition away from coal, oil, and gas production.

Pakistan became the first South Asian country to align with this group, which includes 16 member states across four continents, such as Vanuatu, Fiji, Tuvalu, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
