The weather in Karachi turned pleasant on Tuesday as several parts of the city experienced moderate to heavy rainfall, breaking the spell of hot and humid conditions. Areas including II Chundrigar Road, Sharea Faisal, and Airport Road reported showers early in the morning.
According to meteorologist Jawad Memon, the city is likely to see intermittent rainfall throughout the day due to a monsoon system developing over the Arabian Sea, which has intensified into a low-pressure area.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had earlier forecast scattered showers in Karachi until August 23. With the monsoon strengthening in Sindh, the Met Office has predicted thunderstorms and rain in Karachi, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Larkana, Qambar Shahdadkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, Tharparkar, and nearby districts.
The PMD has cautioned that the next 48 hours are critical, warning that moderate to heavy showers could trigger urban flooding in Karachi. It added that the current monsoon system, forming as a depression near western Odisha, is expected to move toward Gujarat, India, within the next 36 hours.
In light of the forecast, Sindh Chief Secretary has instructed local administrations, the Local Government Department, and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to remain on high alert. Deputy commissioners have been directed to supervise drainage operations in their respective areas to prevent waterlogging.
Weather experts have also advised citizens to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid unnecessary mobile phone use, and refrain from activities such as bathing or dishwashing during lightning strikes, as current can travel through iron pipes and cause serious hazards.
